Tola

This is a 17 track debut studio album from the 23 year old South African rapper, record producer and songwriter ANATII, Which was one of the most anticipated albums this year in SA and Africa as a whole. Anatii displays his fine strength on production and catchy vocal hooks that catches your attention once you hear a track on this full length LP with his extreme use of trap, 808’s and fusion of afrobeat instrumentals throughout the album. Anatii is well-known for blessing other artists both on the production of their tracks and the provision of his vocals on their tracks but falls short on few tracks on this album based on his vocals and some feature choices on the album.

Proper; this track is a beautiful collaboration on the album which features Nigerian songstress Tiwa Savage. The track catches your attention in a distinct way firstly with the hook ‘’poper poper po po po poper’’ exclamation, then the production (beat and mixing) is top notch, after the intro, tiwa savage brings her A game on this track with her smooth silky vocals laced on the beautiful anatii made instrumental, anatii is not left out as he also did well on the track with him taking the second/last verse, and finally the combination of anatii and tiwa savage on the hook was a good direction to take on the track and also the fusion of trumpets sound elevates the outcome, would really love to see the video to this ...

(8/10)

Freedom; this track served as the lead single for the album. As usual a catchy hook ‘’freedom oh they want freedom but none this girl gone give it up for free though, you gone pay for it’’ and hard hitting beat (trap & 808’s) that can tear your speakers or ear drums at maximum volume, the hook is catchy but the verses are clumsy, unattractive and confusing at most times but the bridge is beautiful (6/10)

The Saga: No need for id on this track, another top notch track on the album which features the ‘’SupaMega’’ AKA who recently had a beef with anatii based on the track video which was also outstanding. The track is trendy and braggy with sharp cunny verses from anatii ‘’shout out to saint lebron he’s a saint’’ / ‘’you probably thought I got this money from my father’’ which shows that he can also lace some good bars on any track apart from singing. Aka delivers a hard hitting verse ‘’listen to my old shit that my only pressure’’, the shared third verse on the track was a good idea to bring the track to a beautiful climax, the production (both beat and mixing) on the track was not bad with beautiful strings on the hook and ‘’hey ya hey hey hey ya’’ infused with the beat during the verses of both rappers, the hook was also not left out based on sharp braggy vibe ‘’this ni**as ain’t down to earth the better come back down/ ever turn up on a Sunday cause am getting more money on Monday’’. Together every works well on this second single from the album even with the released video which won best video and best collaboration at the South African hip hop awards. (7/10)

Hour; very generic track, below average with sloppy singing and unattractive hook, It shouldn’t have made it on to the album, the album would have made do with 16 tracks without this track, promise after you hear it once you won’t be interested in going back for a re-listen, the production of the dance beat with fusion of afro beat was minimal or average at best and not a beautiful noise. ‘’we can’t be done in an hour’’, ‘’baby girl keep it down’’/ ‘’from the shower to the counter’’ really anatii. This song is an unflattering reminder of the track which anatii featured Dj Khaled ‘’Bananaz’’ (3/10)

Tell me; one of the most boring track on the album due to constant repetition of the hook ‘’tell me what you want from me’’ really brothers and extremely mellow verses which features American R&B artist omarion. This track looks like something that quick put together in a hurry like a ‘’jollof rice concussion’’, A beautiful producer like anatii and terrific singer like omarion could come up with something better whether it be a trap, rnb or even afro fusion track (looking back at omarion fine tracks like I’m up ft. kid ink & French Montana and post to be or even anatii impressive features on other tracks or his impressive production line) (5/10)

Pray for children; “tell this ni**as it’s the season” really love this track with its nice instrumental which has a hard bass line. Anatii was top notch on his vocal & his display of lyrical content on the hook and verses, but my only minus for this track is his drowsy vocals on ‘’Jesus who’s gone free us/ are they ever gone free us’’. The violin and instrumental to fade the track out too was really outstanding. (I really believe we need to save a generation LOL), would really love a video for this track. (7/10)

Almighty; this track was a little boring with dizzying instrumental and repetition of ‘’I call the Almighty Almighty’’ but the track has a religious and thanking mom message but it’s really distracting and confusing with anatii shouting basically throughout half of the short track, I doubt whether he even knew what he was even saying while shouting. (3/10)

Akheko; another averagely good track which features nice vocals from faarow on only‘’nobody is gonna love you like you like I do’’ i believe she could do more or even have a verse on the track. The instrumental has a classic feel to it with the infusion of bass guitar strings, but not a fan of ‘’yo yo akheko/ akheko akheko’’ repetition. (5/10)

Overdrive; Not a bad track with a dancehall beat and I guess anatii found his voice on this track or the beat hide/goes well with his voice. The hook was really good ‘’overdrive I put it in overdrive/and when…murmuring…then put overdrive’’. (6/10)

Feeling on me; another generic & really average track but the beat from the beginning is captivating, attention seeking and not bad. Everything about this track is really average from the intro ‘’feeling on me, got your girlfriend feeling on me /calling on me, got your girlfriend calling on me’’, verses, hook (on loved the echo of ‘’pre po po po po’’on this track) etc. anatii lacked stress on the vocals for this track, it seemed he was just reciting a school rhyme. (4/10)

The Long way; I really don’t know the usefulness of this short track on the album… seem like a freestyle with a really high tempo instrumental, only really liking ‘’we took the long way’’ bit with the background vocal. (4/10)

YAWI (interlude); “Ooooh…you aint with it” I like the track but it’s basically average, anatii decided to change the tempo of the track half way to the end of the track which you might really like or it would bore you totally ‘’shout out my rival they pray for survival’’. The beat flow through the track is really not bad, from the intro to the strings at the end. (5/10)

Jump; another track that needs no id, I really like the instrumental on track but it loses me on the basic hook by nasty c ‘’pull up say jump/ one man say one thing and another thing’’ but I like the ‘’all my people in the back JUMP’’ part and verses by the entire artist: cassper nyovest was dragging too long but I can’t fault a ni**a ‘’fu*king new bitches in his old house’’, nasty c ‘’what do you think they taking photos for ,am important bitch’’, anatii ‘’my grill is ice cold’’. (6/10)

Thanda; “we been chosen for each other” tuned with auto tune at the beginning was not bad, the beat afro fusion beat is also good with trumpet sounds at various potions of the sound my only minus on the track is average vocals on verses by anatii. The screaming vocals at the end of the track were really nice and outstanding. (6/10)

Hold on; Beautiful fast paced arobeat instrumental produced by anatii and Dj maphorisa, the song had a nice indigenous uhuru hook with nice verses with screams of ‘’ahhhhh’’ at the beginning but flat vocal from anatii on the verses and the repetition of hold on was quite boring (6/10)

Walk away; the instrumental remains me of drake featuring Rihanna take care instrumental, it’s really a good instrumental and beautiful track as a whole. The female vocal was really nice and outstanding; anatii too is not left out on track, nice vocals on the verses and on the hook and on the bridge too ‘’all I wanted is you, things I do/ please don’t walk away’’. (7/10)

So many rooms; this track is not to be ranked as part of the top tracks on the album, but anatii rhymes well on the hip hop beat with loses me piano solo part ‘’you a gangster’’ with the female underground vocals , love the trumpets sounds but the various transitions throughout the track was nothing to write home about. (5/10)

This album is an outstanding body of work and impressive debut solo album by anatii from the production of the beats to the mix and mastering of each track, but anatii can still do better because he has done better than most of the tracks on this LP. The album is a most listen to every music head and fellow artists in the game….enjoy
