Lagos Nawa!

Half way into Lagos Nawa, Olamide’s seventh album, he asserts that he owns Tungba, after first insisting that Sunny (that is King Sunny Ade) owns the guitar, on the hook of Saysaymaley. First reaction is to ask how the Ibadan-based Yinka Aiyefele feels about this spurious claim. Second reaction is to warn Hiphop and Rap heads who had lofty expectation of great couplets in Yoruba; Baddo has disappointed us yet again with another commercial break ...

BOJ, short for Bolaji Ojudokan, has got an unmistakable voice. But this is not all, the Brrother also knows how to use his voice. You may see him as that weird dude with a scraggly beard but when he opens his mouth, something different happens—a transformation which he has chosen as the title of his first LP, Magic. At 15 tracks and with a dazzling graffiti cover art inspired by newsprint and retro pictures, Magic is not just an attempt by B ...

It has been four years since Niniola graced the reality show Project Fame and stepped into our living rooms and lives with the fantastic facility of her vocals. The journey hasn’t been smooth and the connection between reality talent shows and reality itself is still staggering. No matter, and stepped into our living rooms and lives with the fantastic facility of her vocals. The journey hasn’t been smooth and the connection between reality ta ...

It is no news: Jesse Jagz is your favourite emcee’s favourite emcee. And if your favourite emcee happens to be MI, his elder brother, then the confirmation you need has already been affirmed by MI in one of his songs: Jesse Jagz is the greatest. Note that greatest here is deployed as a noun, not an adjective. Not greatest rapper or emcee or singer or songwriter or musician, simply greatest. At 10 tracks, , Jesse Jagz’s latest album, is pro ...

On October 27, 2017, Falz clocked 27 and he celebrated his new age by dropping an album called 27. Dropping a surprise album will always be cool. Pity, Beyoncé already immortalised this practice by lending it her name for our times. Cue Falz. This time last year, the internet was awash with pictures of the lawyer turned rapper with usual suspect, Simisola, in some sort of embrace. They had released promo pictures for their duo EP album Che ...

Mavin’s first lady and golden goose, Tiwa Savage, has surprised us with a new project which she calls Sugar Cane. On the album cover, she is predictably photographed looking all girlie in what would pass for a sugar cane plantation, not looking anything like a 37-year-old mum. Let’s safely conclude that besides her good stature, she is also blessed with a good voice and the good fortune of a successful musical career. Even if divas are mar ...

There is the coming of age album and there is the coming to stay album. There is an interregnum between the two, filled with a time of experimentation and quiet transition. For Simisola Ogunleye, the Chanteuse from Ondo Town, this period was not exactly quiet. Her coming of age album, Ogaju, was a 10 track gospel album produced by Samklef. Those in the know remember Ara Ile, that delightful funky Yoruba gospel song of divine adulation on heavy ...

Believe me, horns can blow life into Lagos nights. Now, not every night and not in every place. On some Friday nights at the Freedom Park, a stifled grunt would go into at least three horns and exit as a groan to heaven and the night would be born. Those were the best times to birth the night with a 13 man collective as midwife. BANTU. Name as pre and post-colonial history. Name as acronym. Double entendre. For about five years, on every ...

Contemporary African Music, controversially called Afrobeats, has waited more than a decade for that final American crossover. This music whose heartbeat resides in Lagos, the economic capital of Nigeria, has waited for that special envoy, that spectacular singer whose vocal cords will ship this music back to world prominence. Let’s agree that Wizkid has always been the chosen one. Coming into prominence when Afrobeats began to find African ...

A third album is a true test of trajectory. For the Itsekiri singer, Omawumi, she is one of the biggest voices in the Contemporary Nigerian music salon. The boom of her vocal cords came to us by way of West African Idols a few years ago. After singing through a season of Reality Television, she emerged one of the finalists. She brought to stage an infectious vivacity and we knew she was poised for stardom. Three albums later, her musical journ ...
